Funding to encourage Aberdonians to get active during Commonwealth Games

15/05/14

Voluntary or not-for-profit organisations or clubs based in Aberdeen are being encouraged to apply for Commonwealth 2014 Community Games Funding.

Aberdeen City Council has created the fund to help local communities celebrate Glasgow 2014 at a grassroots level.

The fund is available for events with a sport or physical activity aspect, which will take place in the city between Wednesday 23 July and Sunday 03 August 2014.

Aberdeen City Council has created the fund as part of its Legacy Plan, which aims to encourage citizens to be more physically active and participate in sport, now and in the future.

With the promotion and increased opportunities for participation in sport and physical activity for everyone in Aberdeen the council wants to maximise the social, educational, health and economic benefits of sport and physical activity in the city.

With first-class sports facilities including Aberdeen Sports Village and the new Aquatics Centre it also wants to develop and sustain pathways which will nurture local sporting talent to reach their full potential.

Leader of Aberdeen City Council Jenny Laing, who is also the convener of Education, Culture and Sport, said: "The games offer a huge potential to inspire, to create and learn.

"We want individuals and communities to get involved, to try something new and to develop friendships and relationships both within Aberdeen but across Scotland and the Commonwealth.

"By making this money available to local communities we want to support and encourage events in Aberdeen to take place during the Commonwealth Games period.

"The legacy from the Games will be that we have encouraged people to get involved, to be more active, who then continue to enjoy the social, physical and mental wellbeing which comes from being more active, for years to come."

A total of 25,000 is available with a maximum of 1,000 on offer to any voluntary group or not-for-profit organisation in the city which meets the funding criteria.
