Kids help city bloom with winning displays
09/06/10
The young winners of Aberdeen City Council's Design a Flowerbed competition will be helping council staff plant up the winning designs today [Wednesday, 9 June].
The competition is part of the Aberdeen in Bloom campaign and is aimed at encouraging youngsters to get involved in the campaign and play their role in enhancing the city's appearance, while developing an interest in horticulture.
Pupils of primary schools across the city were asked to design their own flowerbeds, which will be planted on Great Southern Road today. The flowerbeds will play a vital part as the city is entered into national and international competitions.
There were three categories in the competition, for primary one to three, primary four to five, and primary six to seven.
The winners are: Muhammad Marzuq Shafiq, a primary four pupil at Hazlehead Primary; Hannah Aitken, a primary three pupil at Cornhill Primary; and Aidan Milnes, a primary six pupil at Danestone Primary.
Muhammed, Hannah and Aiden will each be helping the council's environmental staff to plant out their winning designs this morning.
In Bloom Working Group chairman Councillor Ron Clark will also be helping out.
The children have each won a £50 garden centre voucher for their schools.
