Festive fun for all the family at Union Terrace Gardens

A children's nativity play which was cancelled last week due to bad weather will now go ahead at 6.30pm on Thursday 12 December in Aberdeen's Union Terrace Gardens.

The nativity play and festive songs by the pupils of St Joseph's RC School is just one of a bumper selection of free festive treats for all the family in the city centre park.

Following the performances by the schoolchildren Mary and Joseph will be invited to switch on the garden's Christmas tree at 7pm.

The Bon-Accord Silver Band will also be on hand to perform a number of festive tunes during the evening.

Depute Leader of Aberdeen City Council Marie Boulton, who will be there to welcome visitors to the gardens, said: "I am delighted that the children will now be able to perform their nativity show as part of the free festive fun on offer for all the family in Union Terrace Gardens in the run up to Christmas. I hope lots of families will pop along and have a great time."

There is also a Santa's grotto with a difference open to children in the gardens.

Instead of Santa giving children presents they have the opportunity to make their own gifts thanks to free arts and crafts activities being held in the park. The children can then show what they have created when they visit Santa in his grotto.

Santa's grotto will be open until Sunday 15 December at the following times:

Monday – Friday 4pm-7pm

Saturday & Sunday 10am-5pm

It is closed between 12.30pm and 1.30pm so Santa can go for lunch and feed his reindeers.

At various times while Santa's grotto is open local community groups will perform festive songs and Christmas Carols on a special festive stage for visitors to the park to enjoy.

Members of the public are reminded to dress appropriately for the weather conditions.
