Don’t bin your TV – WEEE it

31/08/10

The digital TV switchover for Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire begins tomorrow [Wednesday, 1 September].

The digital TV switchover is the process of turning off the UK's analogue TV signal and replacing it with a digital signal. It will provide more households with more than the five basic TV channels.

Some older TV sets will not work with the new service and will have to be either converted using a digital box or mini-dish, or replaced with a new TV which has a built-in digital box.

Aberdeen City Council would like to remind residents who are considering replacing their TVs that the city's four household waste recycling centres provide a waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) service to help people dispose of their electrical waste and help the environment at the same time.

Waste electrical and electronic equipment includes TVs, DVD players, washing machines, mobile phones, hair dryers, electric train sets, smoke detectors, games consoles, freezers and electric toothbrushes. They can be recycled into something useful instead of being sent to landfill.

The household waste recycling centres are at Greenbank Crescent, East Tullos; Pitmedden Road, Dyce; Perwinnes Moss, Scotstown Road; and Sclattie Disposal Works, Bankhead Avenue.

The centres are open from 10am until 7.45pm Monday to Friday and from 9am until 7.45pm at weekends during the summer months, and from 10am until 4.45pm Monday to Friday, and 9am until 4.45pm at weekends during the winter months.
