25/08/10
Following a visit by HM Inspectors of Education a report has been published on Cornhill School.
During the visit in May this year inspectors noted a number of strengths -
- Friendly, motivated young people who are well focused on their learning
- Progress in developing Curriculum for Excellence
- The quality of the social studies programme
- Provision to support pupils with additional learning needs
- Impact of leadership on the quality of care and support for pupils
Pupils were found to be learning through direct experiences especially through a range of interesting visits as part of social studies classes.
Inspectors noted that the young people take part in a range of activities including sporting competitions, a gardening club where vegetables are grown and then cooked as part of healthy meals.
The pupils have also raised large amounts of money for charities including Cancer Research and Children in Need.
Staff were found to be making a 'bold and determined effort' to implement the Curriculum for Excellence.
The school was found to be working well with a range of local organisations building very effective relationships.
Inspectors noted that the headteacher and depute worked well together and provided a clear direction for school staff. They were found to be committed to improving all aspects of the school.
Director of Education, Culture and Sport Annette Bruton said: "I was very pleased to see this encouraging report.
"I was pleased to see the hard work that is going in to developing the Curriculum for Excellence as well and the hands-on learning that takes place in the school.
"The extra-curricular activities were impressive especially the garden club and the strong links with local organisations.
"I note the comments on strong leadership as well as the commitment of all staff, pupils and parents.
"My management team will work with the school to build on these successes, well done everybody."
