Nominations open for two Community Council elections in Aberdeen
06/03/13
Nominations are open for election to two Community Councils in Aberdeen.
Community Council elections for Froghall, Powis and Sunnybank and Craigiebuckler and Seafield will take place on Thursday 25 April.
Nomination papers can be submitted until 4pm on Thursday 28 March.
Community Councils are elected to represent a particular area of the city and to be a bridge between that community and the City Council and other public authorities.
Their purpose is to give local people a say in matters such as local service delivery and other issues affecting daily life. Community Councils are consulted on planning and licensing matters.
The City Council also involves Community Councils in the community planning process and in many public consultation exercises.
Some Community Councils also promote local activities such as a community newsletter, environmental projects, gala days and fundraising events.
Aberdeen City Council's Community Council Liaison Officer Karen Riddoch said: "We are really keen to get people involved both by standing for nomination and by voting if there is a poll in their area.
"Being a Community Councillor allows local people to act as a bridge between their community and public authorities, giving their area a say in local service delivery and other matters that affect them.
"Aberdeen City Council is committed to strengthening local democracy and community involvement. Your local community is important and when it comes to tackling the big issues that affect it, you do not have to be just a spectator.
"Becoming a Community Councillor in Aberdeen gives you the opportunity to play a vital role in decision making. You do not need any special skills and anyone who lives in the Community Council area and is on the electoral roll can get involved."
