Workers brave heat to improve coastal path

03/07/09

A coastal Aberdeen footpath has been upgraded by a team of volunteers who, along with Aberdeen Countryside Ranger Service, braved soaring temperatures to carry out the gruelling work.

Fifteen members of staff from oil firm Nexen worked on a section of the footpath at Altens, between Doonies Farm and Burnbanks. Despite it being one of the hottest days of the year, the volunteers spent Wednesday [1 July] loading about 20 tonnes of granite dust into wheelbarrows and spreading it on the path.

Their efforts, along with the preparation work done by a contractor, have made a huge improvement to this section of the path.

Aberdeen City Council countryside officer Ian Talboys said: "It was a fantastic day's work and despite temperatures into the mid 20's everyone worked very hard and achieved a great result for the local community, tourists and themselves.

"Everyone had fun and was still smiling at the end of the day. It was a great team building day for the staff as well – many found out what each other did and even came up with some new suggestions to make their office a more environmentally friendly place.

"As work progressed several walkers congratulated the volunteers on their fantastic work. I would like to thank all those who came along and Nexen for supporting this project."

As part of the company's commitment to the local environment and community, Nexen has agreed to fund a programme of work which included a day for some of their staff to volunteer time to help with the work.
