17/03/10

Aberdeen champion boxer Lee McAllister will take time out from training for his next fight to sign up to Aberdeen's flagship road race the Baker Hughes 10K.

Lee McAllister signs up for the 10K run. The Commonwealth lightweight champion known as the Aberdeen Assassin is in training for the defence of his Commonwealth Lightweight title against Ben Murphy on Saturday, 03 April at Manchester's MEN [Manchester Evening News] Arena.

The race, which is on Sunday, 23 May this year, is a well established and prestigious event in the North East of Scotland and was awarded Gold level in 2007 by the British Association of Road Races. For many runners the race is the highlight of their running season so there is always a great demand for places.

The event is also one of the largest mass participation running events in the north of Scotland with approximately 4,000 runners in recent years. It attracts all types of entries, from the serious runner; to corporate groups; those running for charities and individuals who want to get fit. With that in mind, organisers would encourage entrants to sign up early to be sure one of the 4,000 places on offer this year.

The City of Aberdeen's 10K has been sponsored by Baker Hughes for the past 13 years and throughout this time the event has had a major impact on local fundraising for both local and national charities. The eight charities supporting this year's event are Alzheimer Scotland, Bethany Christian Trust, Children 1st, CHAS, CLAN, Erskine, Inspire and Sue Ryder Care Aberdeen.

Lee McAllister said: "I wanted to take part last year in the Baker Hughes 10K last year but places went so quickly I missed out so I'm chuffed to be running in this year's event."
