Winter watching event on offer with city’s countryside rangers

15/02/12

Aberdeen City Council's Countryside Rangers are hosting a bird watching event at their base at Lochinch Farm on Saturday (18 February).

Robin. Countryside Officer Ian Talboys will lead an exploration of Lochinch Farm from the ranger base, just off Redmoss Road at Nigg on 11am. The walk will last around two hours and is expected to finish around 1pm on Saturday.

The walk is open to bird watchers of all ages and experience as they take part in an exploration of Lochinch Farm and the area surrounding Loch of Loirston.

Ian said: "The winter time is a great time to go bird watching at Lochinch Farm, as usually there is a good variety of water birds on the Loch of Loirston especially when it is cold!

"The fields and woodland shelter-belts are also good places to spot different kinds of finches, thrushes and even wading birds such as curfew. Overhead there are often buzzards and kestrels and if we are very lucky even a red kite" Red Kite.

Anyone interested in taking part in the event should wear appropriate clothing, ensuring they wrap up warm and wear appropriate footwear. And if you own a pair of binoculars bring them along too.

Ian added: "We all drive along Wellington Road heading in or out of the city centre and don't have time to stop and see some of the amazing wildlife right here on our doorstep. Saturday is a great opportunity to see firsthand some of the fantastic wildlife we have in the city."

Places at the event are limited so anyone wishing to attend should phone 01224 897400 or email lochinch@aberdeencity.gov.uk to book a place in advance.
