Delays expected during Wellington Road work
20/01/10
The travelling public is warned to expect delays in the Wellington Road area during road and cable-laying work, which is due to begin on Sunday [24 January], weather dependent.
A series of road closures and traffic restrictions will be in place for three weeks as part of the first phase of a Nestrans-funded road-improvement project, which will see a section of Wellington Road resurfaced.
The project has been combined with Scottish and Southern Energy's work to lay power cables on the same stretch of road. The joined-up approach has been taken to avoid further disruption to the public at a later date and to preserve the integrity of the new road surface.
Nestrans chairman Councillor Kevin Stewart said: "This is money well-spent which will improve the surface of this very busy road and, while it will cause some delays to those who use the roads in the area in the short term, will make significant improvements in the long term."
Gordon McIntosh, Aberdeen City Council's director of Enterprise, Planning and Infrastructure added: "The travelling public is inevitably going to be affected by the Wellington Road works, but it is essential and has to be done.
"The council will be doing all it can to minimise disruption to the travelling public during these works and we will do our utmost to ensure that the work is completed as quickly as possible.
"We have been discussing these works with Scottish and Southern Energy to ensure that any disruption caused by the council's resurfacing work and SSE's cable-laying work is kept to an absolute minimum."
"However, delays are unfortunately inevitable and I would urge people to avoid the area if at all possible."
Nestrans has provided £330,000 of funding for the project and Aberdeen City Council will contribute £30,000 to it.
The first phase of the work is due to begin on Sunday [24 January], weather dependent, when Wellington Road will be closed southbound from the junction of Craigshaw Drive to the roundabout at West Tullos Road from 6am until 4pm, when the road surface will be planed off.
From 4pm that day until February 14, weather dependent, the southbound nearside lane of Wellington Road will be closed from a point north of Craigshaw Drive to the roundabout at West Tullos Road. A 20mph speed limit will be applied on the southbound carriageway of Wellington Road from the junction with Greenbank Road to the roundabout at West Tullos Road.
A series of road closures will be put in place on Sunday, 14 February and run until 28 February, weather dependent.
They are as follows:
Wellington Road will be closed to northbound traffic from the West Tullos Road roundabout to Craigshaw Drive. The diversion route is West Tullos Road, Abbotswell Road and Wellington Road;
Abbotswell Road will be closed westbound for approximately 100metres from the Wellington Road junction;
there will be no right turns from: Abbotswell Road into Wellington Road; Wellington Road into Abbotswell Road; Wellington Road into Girdleness Road; Girdleness Road into Wellington Road; Craigshaw Drive into Wellington Road; the Shell access road into Wellington Road; and Wellington Road into Craigshaw Drive;
there will be no left turns from: Wellington Road into Abbotswell Road; Craig Park into Wellington Road; and Nigg Kirk Road into Wellington Road;
a contraflow will be in operation on the southbound carriageway from Craigshaw Drive to the West Tullos Road roundabout;
there will be no access from Craigshaw Drive across the central reservation of Wellington Road to the Shell access road, or vice versa;
20mph speed limits will be in place on the northbound carriageway of Wellington Road from the junction with Balnagask Road to the West Tullos Road junction and for approximately 100 metres from the Abbotswell Road junction;
the outside lane of the West Tullos Road roundabout and all approaches will be closed on one day, during off-peak hours, during this period.
The second phase of the work is planned for March.
