Aberdeen companies invited to attend overseas recruitment fairs
Aberdeen-based companies seeking to attract new staff are invited to take part in Spanish and Portugese recruitment fairs.
Aberdeen City Council's Business Growth service is working on a range of initiative to support city-based energy companies address immediate skills shortages and has identified three events as potential recruitment sources.
The recruitment fairs in Santander, Barcelona and Porto usually attract high numbers of applicants and research carried out by the service has identified the cities as areas where there may be skill surpluses in the disciplines needed here.
They are free to Aberdeen-based companies to attend, but firms must meet their own travel and accommodation costs. Vacancies are advertised free of charge.
The Santander event takes place on October 23 and 24. The Porto fair is on October 29 and 30, and the recruitment fair in Barcelona is on 13 November.
The region faces significant competition from overseas, particularly Norway, Sweden, German, New Zealand, Canada and Australia, in attracting personnel. The global demand for qualified and experienced engineers has a massive inflationary impact on demanded salaries and conditions, further inflating production costs and reduction profit levels and investment.
Expansion of the labour pool in the region is a long-term strategy, with work already underway to encourage more people into the sector. Educational establishments are producing graduates in all aspects of engineering, but companies are seeking candidates with experience and qualifications.
Senior employability, skills and community enterprise officer Heather Farquhar said: "My team continually researches overseas employment markets to identify where they may be potential skill surpluses in the appropriate disciplines. We are conducting research across all areas of Europe and will widen this to a global search in the near future as part of our efforts to encourage more skilled workers to relocate to the North-east."
"We've been actively working in partnership with Eures to deliver successful recruitment events across Europe, including in Gdansk, Ploesti, Bucharest, Poznan, Warsaw, Krakow, Malta and Slovakia, since 2004. A large number of Aberdeen-based companies have participated in these events and successfully recruited staff.
"We are working with a number of local businesses and with a range of organisations to attract more skilled workers to the North-east of Scotland, as well as providing support and advice to companies seeking recruitment help."
If you are interested in participating in any of these events or would like your vacancies promoted, contact Heather Farquhar by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or calling 01224 523361 to register. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Please contact Heather soon to ensure your vacancies are advertised as soon as possible.
The council is also proposing to host an Aberdeen Centre of Engineering Excellence recruitment fair in Romania in November. For more information, contact Heather using the above details.
