Family fun day to promote equality for all
An afternoon of free family fun has been organised by the North East lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and inclusive (LGBT+) Development Group on Saturday 21 September in Union Terrace Gardens, Aberdeen.
There will be face painting, a bouncy castle, rainbow candy floss, music, karaoke, a pony ride and stalls from 2pm to 5pm at the Rainbow Family and Friends event.
It is hoped that the occasion could become a regular event designed to foster good relations and provide a social focus for LGBT+ people, family and friends.
The organisers want to encourage conversation opportunities between community groups, businesses and the LGBT+ community and would like to hear from any groups or agencies which would like to have a stall or host a stand at the event.
They would also like to hear from anyone who would like to volunteer as a guide on the day. Full training will be given to people who are happy to wear a yellow vest or can spare30 minutes or more of their time to help out on the day.
Aberdeen City Councillor Ross Thomson, the council's LGBT champion, said: "Aberdeen is making great strides towards tackling inequality and homophobia in our society and the Rainbow Family and Friends day highlights our commitment to tearing down the barriers which prevent equality.
"This event will help us promote and encourage positive relationships for LGBT+ families and the wider community and I would encourage the general public, the business community and local organisations to come along and get involved in what will be a fantastic fun day for all families."
The North East LGBT+ Development Group is made up of service providers to the LGBT+ community including Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeenshire Council and Grampian Regional Equality Council [GREC].
