Fairtrade Fortnight celebrations
25/02/10
A guide to Fairtrade in Aberdeen has been launched as part of the City Fairtrade Fortnight celebrations.
The theme of this year's Fairtrade Fortnight is the "Big Swap," encouraging shoppers to swap some of their usual shopping purchases for a Fairtrade version.
The handy new Aberdeen guide lists local stockists and outlines local commitment to Fairtrade. Its launch coincides with the successful renewal of Aberdeen's Fairtrade City status by the Fairtrade Foundation.
Chair of the Aberdeen Fairtrade Working Group, Councillor Jennifer Stewart said: "Aberdeen was the first city in Scotland to achieve Fairtrade City status in 2004 and since then local support for Fairtrade has gone from strength to strength.
"An increasing number of local stockists are now introducing and expanding their range of Fairtrade goods and Aberdeen received particular praise for this from the Fairtrade Foundation. It's great to see so many retailers, particularly the Academy Shopping Centre, supporting Fairtrade.
"This shows the important role that local businesses, organisations and shoppers play in maintaining Aberdeen's Fairtrade City status."
The distinctive Fairtrade mark is a guarantee that producers in developing countries received a fair price for their goods.
The Aberdeen Fairtrade guide is available from outlets across the city and can be downloaded from the city council web site www.aberdeencity.gov.uk
