Aberdeen Art Gallery’s major summer exhibition sees record number of visitors

19/08/14

A record number of visitors have been recorded at Aberdeen Art Gallery this summer.

About 28,000 visitors - twice as many visitors for the same period last year - have visited the gallery to see the first major exhibition in Scotland to celebrate the work of world renowned knitwear and textile designer Kaffe Fassett.

Selected specially for Aberdeen, Kaffe Fassett 50 Years in Colour showcases pieces from a remarkable career which spans over five decades.

Since the exhibition opened last month [Saturday 12 July] crowds have flocked to see the show and to take part in workshops led by Kaffe Fassett and attend a series of talks by him at the gallery. The workshops and talks have sold out but Kaffe will return for a public book signing event at 11am on Saturday 30 August at Aberdeen Art Gallery.

Kaffe began his career as a painter in his native California, coming to Britain in the 1960s. He discovered the joys of knitting while on a trip to the woollen mills in Inverness with fashion designer Bill Gibb.

Kaffe went on to create unique and imaginative designs for Gibb's early collections and fashion house Missoni. His passion for colour and pattern subsequently led him to design across a wide range of media including knitting, quilting needlework, rug-making, mosaic as well as painting and textile design – all of which feature in the exhibition.

The exhibition and this programme of events have been supported by Nexen Petroleum UK Ltd.

Deirdre Grant, head of public programmes, Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums, said: "We have had a very busy and colourful summer at the gallery with over 28,000 visitors - twice as many as in the same period last year. There has been a huge interest in the Kaffe Fassett exhibition and all the workshops and events surrounding it, with many visitors travelling some distance to experience them."

To coincide with the Kaffe Fassett exhibition the gallery will host a series of Get Creative workshops, which will be led by well-known and highly respected stitchers and knitters Bruce Duncan, Jennifer McHardy and Carol Meldrum.

Fiona Mair, learning manager, Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums, said: "We are excited to welcome back Bruce Duncan, Carol Meldrum and Jennifer McHardy to share their knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm. Their workshops will offer knitters and stitchers of all abilities the opportunity to take inspiration from Kaffe Fassett, learn new skills and create something uniquely colourful and beautiful."
