Aqua 5 Skills Required for Promotion

Aqua 5 Standards Expected
Answer two water safely questions (see Swimmer and Parent Guide) Two questions answered correctly from list of questions
Perform a throwing rescue using a rope over a distance of 5m Maintain control of one end – rope to land within an arm’s length of target.  Pull target safely to side. Swimmer not expected to coil rope

Perform a plunge dive (dependant on pool depth)

Feet hip width apart, toes curled over edge.  Knees bent for stability and in preparation for take off.   Good arm swing and powerful thrust from feet and legs.  Body to be moving up and forward into hole in water. Streamlined entry with arms fully extended.  Body to submerge just beneath the surface
Push and Glide on side, rotating to front 
Feet on wall, push off on side with arms extending to streamlined position, rotate smoothly onto front

Somersault at wall, transferring into a streamlined push and glide

Facing wall, perform a fast, tucked forward somersault.  Plant feet on wall at angle with toes pointing to water surface.  Strong push off on back rotating to side and extending into streamlined body position on front
Whilst wearing a T-Shirt and shorts, perform a straddle entry, tread water for 30 seconds, attempt to swim 10m side stroke, remove t-shirt and shorts and climb out unassisted Straddle Entry – Keep head above the water.  Tread Water – any arm and leg action but with figure of eight sculling action close to hips.  Swimmer to attempt side stroke with clothes. Remove clothes and climb out without use of steps where possible
Demonstrate a prone feet first scull Body streamlined, arms extended beyond head, palms facing towards direction travelling from, fingertips pointing towards ceiling.
Demonstrate egg-beater kick Keep body upright, scull with both hands while kicking legs in alternating breaststroke action
Understand lane discipline Answer 2 safety questions with regard to lane discipline
Understand basic use of the pace clock for starting and resting Show understanding of rest and take off times during lesson
Swim 2 X 25m Frontcrawl with 10 seconds rest showing correct technique, correct start and finish Long relaxed strokes with minimal splash, good body position.  Unilateral or bi-lateral breathing.  Correct rest must be taken

Swim 2 X 25m Backstroke with 10 seconds rest showing correct technique, correct start and finish

Good body position, shoulders rolling to enable hand entry in line with shoulders.  Long smooth strokes with toes bubbling surface.  Ensure correct rest is taken
Swim 2 X 25m Breaststroke with 10 seconds rest showing correct technique, correct start and finish Long strokes with arm action circling in front of body.  Full extension with legs snapping together.  Correct breathing pattern
Kick 4 X 25m in Individual Medley order with 10 seconds rest Fly – From streamlined push off - Arms extended, kick on front / side to ensure correct finish - Continuous undulating leg action from hips
B/C – From streamlined push off – arms extended, long legs, flexible ankles, with toes bubbling surface
Br/Str – From streamlined push off  - With arms extended or hands to hips, lift heels to hips, turn feet out and snap feet together.
F/C – From streamlined push off – arms extended or superman Style, continuous leg action with long relaxed legs, correct body position
Swim 4 X 25m in Individual Medley order with 10 seconds rest, showing correct start and finish With streamlined push offs and correct finish and transition on all strokes.  Correct technique should be demonstrated rather than speed
Swim 200m continuously, demonstrating at least 3 strokes, correct transition and turns From streamlined push offs change stroke at wall.  Correct technique should be demonstrated rather than speed
