Aqua 4

Swimmers should perform these skills consistently and competently within each level

Aqua 4 Skills Required for Promotion

Aqua 4 Standards Expected
Answer two water safely questions (see Swimmer and Parent Guide) Two questions answered correctly from list of questions
In partners, perform a throwing rescue with floatation aid Stand on poolside, throw aid to land within an arm’s length of partner.  Give clear instructions and bring partner safely to poolside

Whilst wearing a T-Shirt, perform a safe entry, swim 5m, tread water for 60 seconds and then climb out

Straddle entry – keep head above water.  Tread Water – any leg action, sculling arm action, mouth clear of the water.
Climb out unassisted where possible (not using steps)
Perform a Lunge dive  (dependant on pool depth)
Hands together in correct position, head between arms, arms stretched beyond head pointing towards the water. Toes (front foot) grip edge, lift back leg fall into the water, stretch to entry.
Perform a head-first surface dive and swim 5m under water (MIN DEPTH 1.5m) Head First – From a vertical position, pike, completely submerge, legs together extended above hips.  Swim forward remaining submerged.
Perform a fee-first surface dive and swim 5m under water (MIN DEPTH 1.5m)  Feet First – From a vertical position be completely submerged before swimming forward, remaining completely submerged
Swim frontcrawl 5 metres to wall, tumble and attempt to push off on back in streamlined position Progression for tumble turn.  Swimmer to be close to wall before tumbling to enable feet to be planted firmly on wall with a push off on back.
Kick 25m Frontcrawl with no float (arms extended) With arms extended, hands on top, head looking down and forward – streamlined position – alternating relaxed leg action, breathing to front as required
Swim 25m Frontcrawl with bilateral or unilateral breathing With a smooth continuous action, show alternating arm and leg action, breathing to one side and with one hand touch to finish.  Unilateral – as above but to alternate sides in a regular pattern
Perform a supine push and glide and kick 15m backstroke with arms extended On back push off from wall, arms extended above head in a streamlined position, hands on top
Swim 25m Backstroke with good body position and correct hand entry From a streamlined push off, continuous, alternating arm and leg action with straight arm recovery – shoulders rolling , finish on back
Kick 15m Butterfly on front and back without aids From a streamlined position – continuous undulating action.  Arms by sides or extended
Kick 5m Butterfly on right side and 5m on left side (lateral kicking) Push off wall, rotate onto side.  Right arm extended, ear on arm, left arm by side. Continuous leg action.  Change to left side
Walk demonstrating “Keyhole” pull and correct breathing on butterfly In shallow water, leaning forward, demonstrate correct keyhole pull, showing breathing every 2 arm strokes
Swim 15m Butterfly attempting correct timing of stroke A steady constant undulation with 2 kicks to each arm cycle (kicking in/kicking out) breathing once during each stroke cycle or each alternate cycle.  Arms to be clearing the water surface
Kick 25m Breaststroke with float, breathing before each kick Holding float with extended arms, show simultaneous leg action.  As heels are brought to hips head is lifted to breathe in.  As legs are extended breathe out and head drops - still looking forward and down. eg Breathe/Kick/Blow
Swim 25m Breaststroke attempting “orthodox” timing – pull, breathe, kick, glide From a streamlined breaststroke push off attempting correct transition pupils should show long strokes with arms circling in front of shoulders, dorsiflexion and eversion of feet  and correct breathing and timing of stroke.  Hold full extension/glide or stretch
Swim 100m continuously, demonstrating at least 3 strokes From a streamlined push off smooth relaxed strokes showing correct technique, transition and finish, only stopping to touch wall and turn.  Stroke can only be changed at wall
