Aqua 1-5 Programme

Aqua 1

To help children become more confident in the water focusing on the basic skills which are essential to future development, including water familiarisation, orientation and controlled propulsion.

Swimmers should perform these skills consistently and competently within each level

Aqua 1 Skills Required for Promotion Aqua 1 Standards Expected
Answer two water safety/hygiene questions(Question Sheet with Parents) Two questions answered correctly questions from list of questions
Safe entry and exit unassisted Controlled, safe, feet first entry using steps or sit and swivel
Perform movement exercises confidently Walk, Run, Hop, Skip etc
Submerge Total Submersion
Exhale through nose and mouth eg blow floating objects  Nose and mouth in water
Stand in shallow water and demonstrate all four strokes (arm actions) Stand in shallow water, leaning forward on prone strokes, perform arm actions of all four strokes
Float confidently on front with aids and regain feet Competently regaining feet
Float Confidently on back with aids and regain feet Ears in water, competently regaining feet
Kick confidently on front and back with aids  Kicking with a woggle encouraging good position
Push and glide and regain feet without aids Smooth push off from wall / steps face in water, hands on top, together, toes pointed, body stretched, no kicking

Controlled feet first entry Safe entry from standing position on poolside - unassisted / exit unassisted
Standing in shallow water, arms extended below surface, in line with shoulders –  demonstrate a sculling action with hands  Hands cupped, figure of eight movement – repeat 6 times
Kick 5m Frontcrawl with float, face in water Arms and legs extended, toes pointed, showing regular alternating leg action
Kick 5m Backstroke, float held over tummy From wall, smooth push off, ears in water, eyes open, legs extended, toes pointed, regular alternating action
Attempt Breaststroke Kick with aid Using woggle / float demonstrating a circling action attempting dorsiflexion and eversion (Teacher can assist in the preparation for the skill by assisting the child with the foot turn out but not for the assessment)
Walk demonstrating fly arm action, face in water if possible Encourage arms over water, entering in line with shoulders
Attempt Butterfly kick with or without woggle Undulating action, face in water, legs together eg wiggly worm
Push, Glide, Kick on Front for 5m without aids Feet off bottom, encourage face in water,  arms extended in a streamlined position
Push, Glide, Kick on back for at least 3m without aids  Good body position, ears in water, toes to surface
Float confidently on front, no aids Controlled, face in water i.e. star float or various shapes – body motionless
Float confidently on back, no aids Controlled, ears in water i.e star float or various shapes - body motionless
Perform a mushroom float  Face in water, hands holding tucked legs
Submerge with eyes open, pick up object from pool bottom Shallowest part of the pool - total submersion, pick up object with hand - repeat action consistently
