COACHING

Mini Tennis Programme

The Westburn Indoor Tennis Centre is the home to the Mini Tennis Programme for 5-11 year olds.

The aim of the programme is to progress children through the Red, Orange and Green level system until they are ready to play at local clubs. The coaching occurs after school during school term time.

Please download the Coaching Programme Information Fact Sheet for more details on the levels and how to become involved in the programme.

The timetable will give you an indication of class times.

All applications for the mini tennis programme should be made on the application form

Pre School

The Westburn Indoor Tennis Centre operates pre school classes during the day. These classes are bookable weekly and are taken by an LTA qualified coach. The classes are Parent and Toddlers so the coach may require some parental involvement. The classes operate for children between the ages 3-5 years old. For details on class availability contact the Westburn Centre on (01224) 625342.

Adult Programme

This programme runs at the Westburn Indoor Tennis Centre for those aged 16+. There are 2 strands to the programme Adult Coaching and Pay and Play Classes. The adult coaching is progressional, with beginner, intermediate and Advanced levels. The pay and play programme allows you to have a regular game without a partner, the emphasis is on drills and matchplay.

Holiday Programmes

The holiday programmes allow access to coaching for a wider age range 5-16 over the school holiday periods (Easter, Summer and October). The coaching generally takes the form of week long camps over 1 hour every day. During the summer Adult coaching programmes also operate.

The places for these camps are on first come first served basis. To add your name to the mailing list please contact the Tennis Development Officer on (01224) 814786 or tennis@aberdeencity.gov.uk leaving your name address and postcode. The advantage of having your name on the list is that you will receive details of courses direct to your home as soon as they are available.

City of Aberdeen Tennis Squads

Aberdeen City Council operate squads at both the mini tennis level and full tennis level for those who are committed and show talent. All these squads operate with a lower ratio of pupils to coach and players are expected to practice outwith their coaching session.

Mini Squads

The aim of these squads is to progress those children through the mini tennis system to competitive players quickly by offering an extra session a week.

Squads for Red, Orange and Green operate on a Saturday and Sunday dependent on the level. The coaches for the Mini Squads are Christopher Hodsden and Vikki Paterson. As well as the regular training the players will also have access to the Top Gun Holiday camps at Easter, Summer, October and Christmas when they reach Green level.

Selection for the squads is via the annual sift, for details on the next sift Click here

Tennis Squad

The aim of the squads is to give those children already playing at local clubs the opportunity to winter training and progress their game, some to District level. As well as the regular training the players will also have access to the Top Gun Holiday camps at Easter, Summer, October and Christmas, these camps often include a number of children in District training.

City Squad Head Coach is Gareth Rennie and squads operate on a Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Players have regular fitness testing done and are eligible for selection to team events such as the Inter Area Team Challenge, other friendly challenge matches and the North East Tennis Tournament at Gordonstouns.

All squad members must be a member of a tennis club affiliated to the North East of Scotland Lawn Tennis Association, have a LTA rating if 10 and over, play local tournaments and committed to playing tennis. All players must be an Aberdeen resident or attend an Aberdeen City School.
