What is Active Schools?

Active Schools is a term given to all schools in Scotland that provide pupils with sufficient opportunities to get active to the extent that it makes a positive contribution to their health.

The fundamental aim of Active Schools is to give school-aged children the tools, motivation and opportunities to be more active throughout their school years and into adulthood. These opportunities are available before, during and after school, as well as in the wider community.

8 full-time Active School Primary Co-ordinators have been employed across Aberdeen, each co-ordinator works with the schools and the local community to draw together local resources to increase physical activity levels for children and young people.  One Co-ordinator has been assigned to a cluster of primary schools.  There is also a team of 12 Active Schools Secondary Co-ordinators.  One Co-ordinator has been assigned to each secondary school.

The Active School Co-ordinators will not only identify opportunities for increased physical activity, but will recruit pupils who will support and coach their fellow students to help them change Scotland's couch-potato culture for good.
