Hazlehead ASG

Introduction

Welcome to the Hazlehead ASG Active Schools web page.  Here you will find information on the activities and programmes related to Hazlehead Academy and Airyhall, Hazlehead, Holy Family, Fernielea, and Kingsford Primary Schools.

My name is Wendy Carrick and  from August 2008 I will be the Active Schools Coordinator for the Hazlehead ASG taking over from Jo Conlon who is now the Active Schools Manager.  I am looking forward to this new and exciting challenge and getting to meet the pupils, staff and volunteers involved in the delivery of physical activity in the area.

For the previous 3 years I have been the coordinator for the Northfield ASG and with help from staff, senior academy pupils and parents the primary school pupils have been very active.  Pupils have had the opportunity to take part in basketball, bowling, curling, dance, golf, kickboxing, netball, rockclimbing, rugby and snowsports to name a few.  It has not all been about the pupils as staff have also had the chance to get active through golf, hockey and netball, not to mention the number of staff who have been running 10K and marathon's.

Prior to Active Schools I spent a number of years as the council's Football Development Officer for Women/Girls creating sustainable pathways for girls to become involved in football at all levels.  Rachel Corsie a former Hazlehead primary and academy pupil in July 2008 captained the U19 Scotland team which is a great honour.  Through her involvement in sport she has managed to gained a Sports Scholarship to study at Robert Gordon University.  Rachel has worked hard at her sport and travelled many miles to train in Edinburgh, Inverness and Perth over the years so a massive well done to her but I think the key to her success is that she just loves playing football.

So whatever your age or ability there is no better time to get 'more active more often' so keep your eye on this website to see what is on in your area. I will also put information on the Active Schools notice board in your school and where possible I am looking to put information on school windows in key areas so that parents/guardians can keep up-to-date with what's on offer.

If you would like to receive up to the minute information via email please let me have your email address and I will add you to the mailing list.  When you send your email can you please include your child's name, age and what school they are attending so I can ensure you receive relevant information.

Please feel free to email or pick up the phone and call me to see what activities you can become involved in.

Latest News

P4 Cycling

Parent Liz Pirrie from Airyhall has completed her cycle tutor training course and is able to train volunteers to organise cycle training in school.  With help from Liz Active Schools are hoping to start a primary 4 after school cycle club in each school.  The club will run for 10-weeks during April - June 2009 and currently I am busy recruiting volunteers from the schools to run this club.

If you have a child in primary 4 and would like further information about the club or would like information on volunteering to help run the 10-week cycle club please contact Wendy on tel (01224) 497179.

Adult Netball

I am looking for staff and parents to make up a netball team to play a friendly against the 'Bounce Back to Netball' group.  The games will be in short 10 minute bursts with an opportunity to change positions after each game.  You do not need to have played before and the small amount of rules will be explained as we go.  The match will be at Banks O ' Dee on Tuesday 25th November 8-9pm and will cost £2 per person.  If you would like to join us for a fun evening of netball contact Wendy on tel. (01224) 497175.

If you are not wanting to join a netball club but would like to get back into netball or indeed start playing you are welcome to join the 'Bounce Back' group at any stage.  It is a pay and play activity so you pay £4 when you attend.  The coaching is taken by level 2 volunteer coach Caroline Walker and is a great way to keep fit.  For more information and to check a session is on please contact Caroline on tel. (01224) 814779.

Volunteers

Being new to the area I am looking to get in contact with any volunteers who currently run activities or teams within the 5 schools and find out a bit more about your activity and see how Active Schools can help you in any way whether this be through helping recruit more volunteers, identify appropriate coach education courses, first aid and child protection courses or publicising on our website the activities you are organising.

If you are interested in finding out more about helping with an activity in your school or the ASG please get in touch.  No formal qualifications are required just enthusiasm and an interest in helping kids get active.  You don't necessarily have to volunteer every week it can be when you are available.  Please note that all volunteers will require to complete a disclosure form prior to volunteering in our programmes.

Mark Pain our coach education coordinator has put together a great range of workshops and governing body courses for volunteers, including child protection and first aid.  If you would like to know more please contact Wendy Carrick on (01224) 497179.

Cross Country Series 2007-8 sponsored by Run-4-It

Wow! What another fantastic turnout for this years local series with over 120 pupils registered.  Pupils from Hazlehead, Holy Family and Kingsford have had the opportunity to attend cross country clubs run by school staff - Mrs Crawford (PE Hazlehead Academy), Miss Christie at Holy Family and Mr MacArthur at Kingsford.

This years series culminated in a Champion of Champion race at Harlaw playing fields, Harlaw Road which saw some close racing from youngsters across the city.  The 'Big Run' in May was also a fantastic day with 320 runners from primary 5-secondary 2 taking part and all receiving a medal of participation.

Club Golf for primary 5 pupils - Hazlehead Golf Club

As part of winning the Ryder Cup bid every primary 5 pupil in Scotland is being given the opportunity to try golf at school through the firstclubgolf programme.  Schools have been given £300 worth of golf equipment and staff have been trained to deliver the 6-week programme during January - March.  The next step is for these pupils to attend further coaching at their local club using proper golf clubs provided through the golf programme.

In order to be able to deliver this further coaching clubs have been undertaking a number of key developments with the help of Grampian Golf Development Officer Audra Booth.  Key people at Hazlehead Golf Club have been working on recruiting volunteers and putting them through the 2-day golf course which will enable them to deliver the 10-week programme.  The club also have in place a Child Protection Policy and have applied for funding to purchase the required golf equipment.

Because the club have been busy doing this work the first coaching block will start in September.  If you are currently entering primary 6 in one of the 5 schools that the Hazlehead ASG is covering you are eligible to participate in the coaching.  Places are limited and for further details please contact Wendy Carrick on tel. (01224) 497179.
