Progress Update

NYOP’s building contractor Pihl currently has 2 Secondary and 5 Primary Schools in progress.  Progress has been excellent, with each site rapidly taking form.

The precast ‘sandwich’ panels are a key feature of the building system used for the secondary schools, being brought to site ready assembled with a high-performance insulation material sandwiched between the internal finish and the external finish.  At the two Secondary School sites, Cults and Bucksburn, all the precast wall and roof sandwich panels have now been placed, with the sealing and finishing works between the panels also now virtually completed.  At Cults all steel trusses have been erected in the Assembly Hall and at Bucksburn the prominent Dining hall steelwork feature has also taken shape in the last month.

Mechanical and electrical services have also begun, with a variety of drainage, and ventilation works.  Work also includes the underfloor heating system that will be a feature of all the new schools.

This month will see the external doors installed, steel trusses erected in the link corridors as well as external block-work; including the 3 minibus garages at the Bucksburn site and the granite cladding.

At the Primary new-build sites a Glulam (laminated wood) timber frame construction is being used, and this can already be clearly seen at the Mile End and Heathryburn sites where the erection of the Glulam frames and roof cassettes took place during the last month.  At Heathryburn the installation of the external wall panels is also now well underway, and begins at Mile End this month also.

Foundation work, drainage and site preparations are ongoing at the Braehead and Hazlehead sites, and are completed at the Airyhall site.  A similar transformation to the first two primary schools sites is due in the next two weeks at Airyhall with the erection of the Glulam frame, which will have the main structural elements of the new school buildings visible within just a few weeks.

Project Overview

The 3Rs Project is the first step in the regeneration of Aberdeen City Council’s schools estate.  The initial phase will see 2 secondary schools replaced, 7 new primary schools built and one refurbished, and the incorporation of two special schools within the new developments.  The 3Rs Project is being implemented through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) using a Non-Profit Distributing Organisation, with support from the Scottish Government.

All schools will be seen as community schools, and community facilities and other Council and public services will be delivered from the buildings.  Further information on the provisions at each school can be found in the 'Proposals' section to the right of the screen.
