General Design Notes
Features
Each primary school will serve pupils from nursery to primary 7, with two nursery classrooms being provided as standard.
Each new primary school will have an all-weather pitch in accordance with sportscotland recommendations.
Provision has been made at each school for the building to be extended where it is thought possible for the school roll to grow beyond its nominal designed capacity, given pupil roll forecasts at the time.
Each school will be provided with a fully equipped cooking kitchen for the on-site preparation of school meals to support the Scottish Executive's "Hungry for Success" recommendations for school catering.
Sustainability
Each school will have the following sustainability features:
- Natural light
- Natural ventilation
- Rain water harvesting
- Scandinavian standards of insulation
- Lighting management system linked to ambient levels of daylight
- Energy generation at each school
- Airtight buildings
- Use of glulam timber frames and timber cladding (primary schools)
- Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS)
Community
Each school is being provided with community facilities to suit the needs of the local area, taking into account other local provision. These community facilities will be accessible by members of the community during schools hours as well as at other times of the day. Provision has been made for the buildings to be open and accessible to meet the current pattern of use. Areas of the building not used after school can be locked to minimise energy consumption and prevent unauthorised access.
External spaces
Great care will be taken in the design of external spaces around the schools to provide safe, stimulating places for kids' play, spaces for kids to gather, and spaces where teaching an learning can take place out of doors.
All schools will have sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) to reduce storm water run-off to water courses and public sewers
