EXPLORE ABERDEEN

Bucksburn Academy and Community Campus

Bankhead Academy will be replaced with a new school on the site adjacent to Beacon Centre for up to 650 pupils.  This will be an extended community campus facility that will incorporate a community library to replace the current Bucksburn Library, an extensive remodelling of the Beacon Centre and extended facilities for up to 80 pupils with additional support needs of secondary school age from across the city to replace Marlpool School.  There will also be an office to be leased by NHS Grampian to locate one of three Child Development Teams as part of their strategy in respect of their services to children.  The joint location of this team and the Marlpool unit will be beneficial to both services.  The sports facilities at the refurbished Beacon will complement facilities at the school, and will also include a full-size, all-weather floodlit playing pitch for football or hockey.

  • Projected roll of proposed new school at 2010: 551 pupils (2003 based forecasts)
  • Design capacity: 650 pupils

General Design Notes

Features

Each primary school will serve pupils from nursery to primary 7, with two nursery classrooms being provided as standard.

Each new primary school will have an all-weather pitch in accordance with sportscotland recommendations.

Provision has been made at each school for the building to be extended where it is thought possible for the school roll to grow beyond its nominal designed capacity, given pupil roll forecasts at the time.

Each school will be provided with a fully equipped cooking kitchen for the on-site preparation of school meals to support the Scottish Executive's "Hungry for Success" recommendations for school catering.

Sustainability

Each school will have the following sustainability features:

- Natural light

- Natural ventilation

- Rain water harvesting

- Scandinavian standards of insulation

- Lighting management system linked to ambient levels of daylight

- Energy generation at each school

- Airtight buildings

- Use of glulam timber frames and timber cladding (primary schools)

- Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS)

Community

Each school is being provided with community facilities to suit the needs of the local area, taking into account other local provision.  These community facilities will be accessible by members of the community during schools hours as well as at other times of the day.  Provision has been made for the buildings to be open and accessible to meet the current pattern of use.  Areas of the building not used after school can be locked to minimise energy consumption and prevent unauthorised access.

External spaces

Great care will be taken in the design of external spaces around the schools to provide safe, stimulating places for kids' play, spaces for kids to gather, and spaces where teaching an learning can take place out of doors.

All schools will have sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) to reduce storm water run-off to water courses and public sewers
