Air Pollution

Details

The Council routinely monitors air quality at locations throughout the city for pollutants that are known to have an adverse effect on human health. The pollutants monitored are:
  • Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx, NO2, NO)
  • Carbon Monoxide
  • Sulphur Dioxide
  • Particulate matter (PM10)
  • Ozone
There are four continuous monitoring stations located at Market Street, Union Street, South Anderson Drive and Errol Place (off King Street) providing data every 15 minutes on pollution levels. Information from the Errol Place site and many other locations throughout the country are published on an Air Quality Archive. The Archive also contains general information on the sources of air pollution and effects on human health. The Council has carried out various reviews and assessments of air quality in recent years. The following reports are available:
  • 1st Stage Air Quality Review and Assessment, 1999
  • 2nd Stage Air Quality Review and Assessment, 2000
  • 3rd Stage Air Quality Review and Assessment, 2001
  • 4th Stage Air Quality Review and Assessment, March 2003 (Available below)
  • Updating and Screening Assessment Report August 2003 (Available below)
  • Local Air Quality Management Detailed Assessment, August 2004 (Available below)
  • Detailed Air Quality Assessment March 2008

Air quality in Aberdeen is generally good, however concentrations of nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter in parts of the city centre around Union Street and Market Street and the junctions with King Street and Holburn Street exceed national air quality objectives. Road traffic is the main source of the raised pollution levels in the city centre. The affected area has been declared an Air Quality Management Area and is the Council is developing an Air Quality Action Plan to improve the air quality in this part of the city. You can report Air Pollution issues by using the Online Fault Reporting System.
