Historical Research: Privies and Other Filthiness
The Environment of Late Medieval Aberdeen c.1399-1650
As part of this Project, in 2003 Chris Croly from the Archaeological Unit at Aberdeen City Council presented a lecture; 'Privies and Other Filthiness...' The Environment of Late Medieval Aberdeen.
The lecture explored aspects of public hygiene in the streets of medieval Aberdeen from the fifteenth century onwards. The lecture specifically focused on exploring who and what produced waste and how that waste was dealt with.
The reasons and concerns behind an increased need to clean the streets of Aberdeen were also examined by comparing and contrasting the city with other Scottish burghs, other European cities and to modern day.
