Welcome to Aberdeen Library & Information Services online resources.

Online Databases available by remote access from your home PC and within libraries

With a valid Aberdeen City Library card you can access these databases from home or elsewhere via the Internet. Go to the resource you wish to view by clicking on the highlighted link and you will be asked to enter your card number. Enter the number in full with no spaces. Please note that for DNB you will need to enter ABER before the number.

An online version of  Encyclopedia Britannica  is available to 3 age specific groups as follows;

Each version has a homepage with appropriate content, features and an interface that has been developed for that age group.  They contain thousands of articles and illustrations.  In addition there are news bulletins, quotations and a large number of online journals can be consulted.

knowuklogo
KnowUK  provides key information about the people, institutions and organisations of the United Kingdom.  It is an internet source of the most authoritative reference materials published, eg. Who's Who, Municipal Yearbook and The Year Ahead.

Kompass Global is an internet business directory of business information for purchasers and suppliers of industrial products and services. Worldwide it provides details of over 2 million companies in 75 countries, 750,000 trade names and 3.5 million executive names. For the UK details are listed of over 41,000 companies, 44,000 trade names and 16,000 filed accounts of firms that provide an industrial service.

newsuk
NewsUK provides access to 68 national and regional newspapers and selective magazines. Titles include The Press and Journal, Scotsman, The Herald and The Economist. Back issues can be searched and regular special reports on current issues are available.

dnb-logo
The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (ODNB) is the online version of the classic multi volume work of British biography. Over 50,000 biographies of notable men and women connected to the British Isles from the 4th. Century BC to recent times.
Note: To access the ODNB please click on the above link and enter ABER followed by your library card number (no spaces or characters).

Exodus from Careers Europe aims to be a gateway for anyone wishing to study, work, train, take time out or live outside the UK.

Online Databases – Accessible within Libraries

There are other online resources which cannot be accessed remotely but are available from within the central and/or branch libraries:-

Citizen’s Advice Notes (CANs) covers social legislation and provides a good source of initial guidance on many issues

Specialist Info provides information on over 37,000 General Practitioners and over 34,000 Consultants within the UK. GPs. can be searched for by name or practice and Consultants by name, hospital or health trust. Also has a listing of Charity and Support Group websites

Times Archive
The Times Digital Archive
gives access to 200 years of the London Times from 1785 to 1985.

The 19th. Century British Library Newspapers collection contains full runs of 48 newspapers specially selected by the British Library to best represent nineteenth century Britain and includes the Aberdeen Journal

SCRAN
SCRAN provides access to quality images, sounds, movies and learning resources. There are over 300,000 images from libraries, museums, galleries and archives on a large rangeof subjects from sport to government to architecture and more


                                                        Funderfinder

Funderfinder is an easy to use database which searches for sources of funding for individuals and groups. Those looking to finance a course of study, a gap year or personal development can access People in Need (PIN) in the Information Centre in the Central Library, Airyhall, Dyce and Mastrick Branch Libraries and the Kincorth Community Access Point. If you need to fundraise for a voluntary group or organisation then Groups in Need (GIN) is available in the Central Library.

We can undertake searches and provide access for you to key business directories at the Central Library such as;

Key British Enterprises is a database of over 200,000 companies with basic details.

British Standards - a portal of core UK technical standards, documents and laws.

MarketLine
MarketLine is an online source of company, industry and country information

Family History

ancestry library edition logo
Ancestry Library Edition is now available free on the PCs in the Information Centre of the Central Library.  Ancestry is one of the most popular family history websites, offering access to billions of names and thousands of searchable databases. The collections cover mainly the United States but also other countries, including Scotland. The collections include historical records, stories & publications, photographs & maps, family trees & messages boards and charts & forms. Search hints and tips are also available to help you use the website.
