Disability Equality Scheme
Details
Aberdeen City Council is committed to promoting the rights of people with disabilities to an inclusive and accessible city. We welcome the Disability Equality Duty, which asks authorities to look actively at ways of ensuring that people with disabilities are treated equally and fairly.
The scheme provides a way forward in achieving our aims to tackle discrimination and to be active in meeting the needs of all our citizens. As an organisation, the Council values diversity and respects difference. Our scheme gives a legislative framework, which guides us towards proactive approaches to equalities. We go beyond what is simply required to comply with legislation. We seek positive responses to disability equality from all our staff, partners and stakeholders in a scheme that is closely aligned to Aberdeen City Council's strategic priorities.
Our plan is to make services more accessible. We did research which revealed that although we have good examples of practice in Aberdeen, we still could do better. The community groups and partners involved in shaping the scheme told us of their concerns to make Aberdeen a leader in the field. They told us of some of the day to day difficulties they experience and we have, through our action plan, pledged that we will address the issues they raised.
We plan to ensure that the interests of people are taken into account in decision making at a very early stage in projects and in policy making. We want to make community planning more inclusive to ensure that plans reflect the real diversity of population in Aberdeen. A number of points from the action plan will start this process.
We will provide training for our staff.
We will continue to provide information in a variety of formats.
We will continue to provide specialist communication services to meet the needs of children and young people.
We will investigate and seek to improve transport needs.
We will support individuals and groups to become involved in the Disability Advisory Group.
These practical steps with the rest of the action points in our plan will go some way to making Aberdeen a better place to live for everyone. We have built into the plan a number of targets and timescales so that you can measure our progress. In this way we seek accountability, transparency in decision making and of course, involvement of all people in the democratic processes of local government.
In thinking "beyond the ramp" we hope to encourage a change of attitude to disabilities. In this the Council requires your support to create a positive ethos. The most important thing about the scheme is to identify the best way of involving people in its development and progress. We need to know about the barriers you face, outcomes you expect and your priorities for action planning.
We welcome feedback on any part of the scheme and on how it is implemented. Let us know what you think.
