Aberdeen Gomel Trust
Details
The cities of Aberdeen and Gomel (in Belarus) have been twinned since 1990. Thanks to introductions made by Aberdeen's French twin city of Clermont-Ferrand, which had been twinned with Gomel since the 1970s, Aberdeen and Gomel councillors met at an exhibition in Clermont-Ferrand and formed a strong rapport, leading to a twinning agreement.
Upon returning from the twinning ceremony in Gomel, the then Lord Provost of Aberdeen approached the regional health board with a request from Gomel for help in the Chernobyl aftermath. A medical and scientific team went to assess the situation in Gomel and the Aberdeen Gomel Trust was formed with the purpose of formulating and putting into effect policies designed to assist the City of Gomel and Gomel Oblast in addressing and resolving the medical, nutritional, social and spiritual problems being experienced by them.
The Trust is a semi-autonomous body composed of city councillors, medical and scientific specialists and others representing the universities, churches, Rotary Clubs and Friends of Gomel. The Trust receives a grant of £10,000 per year from the Common Good Fund.
