The Council and its Committees

Councillors in Aberdeen City Council take decisions in meetings of the Council or its Committees. To do this the Council decides which Committees it wishes to set up, what work each Committee will do and what Council services the Committees will be responsible for.

Sub-Committees, Boards and Trusts

There are some areas of work where more in-depth discussion is required or where the Council wishes to involve people who are not Councillors in discussions. In these circumstances, the Council will often set up a Sub-Committee, Task Group, Forum or similar.

To find out more, go to the List of Council Subcommittees and Task Groups and List of Boards and Trusts.

The Council

There are 43 Members of the Council which comprise of Members of the following political groups: 15 Liberal Democrat, 13 SNP, 10 Labour, 4 Conservative and 1 Independent.

Full Council meetings are held once every six weeks and involve every Member of the Council. These meetings are chaired by the Lord Provost of Aberdeen, Peter Stephen and in his absence the Depute Provost, John West will chair the meeting.

Committees are made up of members from the political groups of the Council in numbers proportionate to the political make-up of the full Council.

Can I attend a Council or Committee meeting?

All Council and Standing Committee meetings are open to the press and public. The meetings almost always take place in the Town House, which has public access doors on both Broad Street and Union Street. Disabled access is via the Broad Street entrance.

There are some occasions when part of the business to be discussed is confidential and will be considered in the absence of the press and public. Often, this is because an individual's personal details are under discussion or the financial affairs of a business (but not the Council) require to be kept confidential. If an item is to be held in confidence it will be listed in the confidential items section of the agenda and the Convener (Chairperson) will make it clear to everyone at the meeting when items are to be discussed in private.  Members of the public can submit relevant questions to the Core Committees mentioned above.

How do I find out about forthcoming meetings?

As well as using these pages on the Council website, you can visit the Central Library to view copies of agendas for forthcoming meetings and at  branch libraries around the city. Every Friday, the dates for the next week of meetings are displayed on the noticeboard outside the Broad Street entrance of the Town House.
