Douglas Paterson - Chief Executive

Douglas_PatersonAs Chief Executive of Aberdeen City Council, Douglas Paterson heads a large innovative public sector organisation with over 11,500 staff and a budget of £350million.

Under his leadership, the authority is undergoing a significant change programme, including radical new structures designed to maximise customer and citizen care, as well as encouraging local people to become more involved in democracy and the planning and delivery of key services.  The Council has also pioneered joint working across the whole public sector including our neighbour Aberdeenshire Council. Partnership working with the private, independent, and voluntary sectors is key to the Council’s success, and we are setting new standards in inclusion, city development and environmental sustainability.

Douglas has several professional qualifications in Education including a MEd (Hons) degree from the previously titled Robert Gordon Institute of Technology. Diplomas in both Management Studies and Marketing were gained at the same institution.

With a career background in education, including several years as a teacher and headteacher, Douglas is a former Director of Education with Grampian Regional Council and is a member of both the Institute of Management and the Institute of Marketing.  Douglas has been Chief Executive of Aberdeen City Council since 1995, and in 2006 was awarded a CBE in recognition for his services to local government.
