EXPLORE ABERDEEN

Global Footprint

The North East global footprint project is a partnership between Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeenshire Council and WWF Scotland to investigate how much nature we are consuming compared with what is available.

The project has found that North East Scotland has one of the biggest footprints in the UK. The North East Scotland Global Footprint Reduction Report published in February 2007 identified energy use, food and drink and transport as the main contributors to our region’s footprint.

North East Scotland Global Footprint Reduction Report

Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Councils have made a commitment towards evidence based policy decisions by adopting the global footprint tool. In future, all policies and strategies will be “footprinted” to give councillors and officers a clear understanding of their environmental implications. The tool will soon be used to evaluate the different land-use strategies proposed for the North East Structure Plan. It will be used to provide an environmental baseline for Aberdeen City Councils State of the Environment Report. Further work will be carried out to develop a framework to incorporate global footprint into the Strategic Environment Assessment process.

The project worked with external organisations and communities to promote global footprint. Ellon and Huntly townships within Aberdeenshire have developed and used questionnaire surveys in schools and different community group to assess their global footprint. Once completed, the communities intend to development local strategies to help reduce their impact on the environment and become more sustainable.
