Aberdeen EcoCity Awards
The 2008 Aberdeens EcoCity Awards were presented at a special ceremony at Aberdeen Blooms on Saturday 30 August.
Blue Peter Gardener, Chris Collins and Councillor Ron Clark presented prizes to the winners and runners up of a range of community and educational projects to protect or enhance the environment.
Scooping top prize and a cheque for £1,500, was Healthy Roots Ltd, for a community led initiative to transform a derelict area of ground into a local park.
Pupils from Danestone Primary Schools Eco Committee won the Educational Establishment category.
The University of Aberdeens Natural History Centre was highly commended for its environmental education work and beCyCle was highly commended for its bicycle recycling and lending scheme.
Category winners each received £500 and the best overall submission was presented with a special Gold Award receiving a further £1,000 in prize money to spend on an initiative of their choice.
All winners received a certificate and goody bag.
This is the second year for the award scheme which now runs annually to recognise and reward the hard work of local individuals and organisations doing their bit to look after Aberdeen's environment.
Eligible environmnetal projects need to have taken place within the last 12 months.
This year a special award was presented to the winners of a reusable bag design competition, run as part of the councils Fantastic it's not Plastic campaign to tackle the problems caused by plastic bag litter. Winners in the under 16 and over 16 categories were each awarded £100.
The Aberdeen EcoCity Awards are run by the city councils, EcoCity team. The 2008 awards were funded by Aberdeen Airport, Keenans Recycling, The Junction, EnviroCentre and Wood Group.

Awards
To be eligible entrants must either be resident in Aberdeen or the project must have taken place in the City. The initiative may either be entered by the organiser, or be nominated by another.
How to enter
Entry forms for the 2009 Aberdeen EcoCity Awards will not be available until next year. Details willl be availbale on the website nearer the time.
