Genealogy Search Room
Genealogy Search Room Services
Access to the statutory birth, death and marriage registers, which date from 1855, is available through a 'Particular' or a 'General Search'.
A 'Particular Search' requested in person at the public counter, is conducted by the Search Supervisor or registration staff on your behalf and costs £5 per entry, for a fifteen-minute search. If a longer search for two or more entries are required, then it is advisable to book a 'General Search', when researchers are given access to the registers in the Search Room, under the supervision of the Search Supervisor, to conduct their own research. For a full guide to the services, view or download the Family History Leaflet.
You need Adobe Acrobat to read this document. If you don't have it you can download it free by using the link below.
If travelling any distance, it is advisable to book in advance. Please also bear in mind that many of the registers are quite large, heavy and awkward to handle, and access to those on the higher shelves requires the use of a stepladder. However, the Search Supervisor can provide assistance. The Search Room is situated on the ground floor of the Upperkirkgate entrance to St Nicholas House, which has a ramp for access. View the location map.
A postal service is also available, where the Search Supervisor will conduct an hour long search on the computer and send you digital images. The charge for this is £15 per hour.
