Birth, Death and Marriage Records for Aberdeencity (1855 - 1984)

The Birth, Death and Marriage records for the City of Aberdeen, from 1855 to the present day, are available for research in the Search Room. The records are in bound registers for the years 1855 to 1984, with birth registers shelved together along one wall, deaths on a second wall and marriages on a third.

Arranged in year order, beginning 1855, each year comprises three to six separate volumes for the different registration districts of Aberdeen. The records for the St Nicholas and the Old/St Machar districts date from 1855 and are held in the larger volumes, whilst the other smaller registers are for the districts of: Nigg (1855-1931); Old Aberdeen (1886-1930); Woodside (1886-1930) and Rubislaw (1914-1930).

  • After 1930/1 the six districts were reduced to three; Northern, Southern and Eastern Aberdeen.
  • From 1968 the districts amalgamated into one registration office for the City of Aberdeen.
  • From 1940 onwards the birth, death and marriage records are available on microfiche, with separate bound paper indexes for the years 1966 to 1992.
  • Since 2005 we have access to records for the whole of Scotland.  This is accessible by the Search Supervisor
  • Census images for 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, and 1901 are also accessible
