Summer Choreographic Project for Advanced Level Dancers

With Steinvor Palsson

Monday 28 July - Friday 1 August

9.30am - 4.30pm

citymoves is delighted to welcome Edinburgh-based dancer and teacher Steinvor Palsson to lead this week long workshop for advanced level dancers. Each morning will start with a Cunningham-based class, with emphasis on placement, core strength and breath. This will be followed by choreographic sessions looking at a piece of music from the Baroque period, creating simple movement phrases and exploring different ways of developing these phrases within the musical framework.

Of Icelandic parentage, Steinvor Palsson was born and raised in Edinburgh. After completing her dance training, she moved to England in 1979 and danced professionally for 12 years, performing with a variety of companies including the Spiral Contemporary Dance Company, the Royal Opera Company, Scottish Opera and the Imminent Dancers Group, directed by Matthew Hawkins. Steinvor returned to Edinburgh in 1992 and since then has worked extensively as a Freelance teacher and choreographer. She is currently teaching at Dance Base, Dance For All and Edinburgh's Telford College. She is also a regular teacher for the X Factor Dance Company and the Curve Foundation Dance Company, of which she is also Patron. Her choreographic work includes pieces for Scottish Opera, the Ensemble Group, St. Mary's Music School, Scottish Ballet's Education Unit, the Dance Base production Off Kilter and the Scottish International Storytelling Festival. In 2007 she was part of '26 solos' created by Ian Spink and was given the opportunity to perform extracts from it in April of this year, as part of the POOL performance at The Space in Dundee.

fast+Dirty @ citymoves

22 - 25 October 2008

Applications are now being sought for participant performers and creators for our October Research Project.

fast+Dirty will consist of 3 site-specific self contained projects led by selected creative teams of 2 artists together with 2 or 3 performer/participants. We are looking for creative people who can collaborate across art-forms, who have clearly defined objectives and who are also prepared to step out of their comfort zones. At the conclusion of fast+Dirty there will be a sharing of the work produced on Oct 25th.

Each project will contain a mix of skilled practitioners - dancer, director or visual artist, musician, dancer or writer, media artist, choreographer etc, and will be led by a creative team who have pre-planned their particular research idea. During the research period there will be a daily session allowing feedback from other participants. Each of the projects must contain an element of dance and each team may also contain trainee volunteer artists as appropriate.

If you are interested in participating as creator or performer/participant or as a trainee volunteer please contact Ian Spink ispink@aberdeencity.gov.uk with fast+dirty in the subject line or write to: Ian Spink, citymoves - fast+Dirty, c/o Aberdeen Art Gallery, Schoolhill, Aberdeen, AB10 1FQ

If you want to perform - tell us what you’ve done. If you want to be part of a collaborative creative team - tell us what you might do and with whom. Artists who are still in training and would like to volunteer please send a short profile of what you are currently doing and what experience you’d like to gain.

PLEASE NOTE: There are very few places available on this workshop. Participants will be chosen on the basis of a written application available on request.
