2007 Bicentenary of the Abolition of the British Slave Trade

Bicentenary 2007The bicentenary of the abolition of the British slave trade has been marked by Aberdeen City Council and partners with a series of events and activities including storytelling, film making workshops and re-enactments.  These activities will continue with music and craft workshops, which will be funded by the National Lottery Awards for All and the Friends of Aberdeen Art Galleries and Museums.  These workshops intend to focus on and celebrate African Culture with a range of activities, which will reflect the impact of the African Diaspora.

The workshops form part of StoryLab, the first nationwide annual celebration of the power and excitement of stories and storymaking for children and young people. The Scottish Storytelling Centre is StoryLab HQ from the 6th to 26th October, amongst its programme storylab will be bringing stories from Africa and Scotland together.

African Craft for Kids

A series of craft workshops and activities for 5-12 year olds to celebrate African arts and culture. Storyteller Kelone Khudu-Petersen will instigate the workshops which will be led by Sculptor Chris Bailey, using various crafts in these fun and informative workshops.
Venue: Aberdeen Art Gallery, Schoolhill, Aberdeen, AB10 1FQ.  Monday - Friday, 22 - 26 October; 10 am–12 noon (9-12 year olds); 1-3 pm (5-8 year olds); Free

Urban Poetry 

Take part in this workshop to learn creative writing; the art of performance poetry, rapping and mc-ing with MC Adjet where participants will have the chance to perform before a loud and lively audience. The workshops will use stories of the abolitionists and those who revolted against the slave trade as source material.  Venue: Aberdeen Maritime Museum.  Tuesday-Friday, 23 - 27 October; 10:30 am– 3:30pm; 12 years plus; Free.

Musical Synergies

Music workshops for young people to explore and learn about the synergies between Afro-Caribbean spiritual music and the Bothy ballads from Scotland, in their themes and language.
